What we do to wood
Wood outdoors is a different problem than stucco or drywall. It moves, it drinks, and it feeds mildew if you let it stay wet.
Scope of work

Stain or paint on exterior wood
Stain penetrates. It carries pigment and resin into the wood fibre and sits inside the surface rather than on top of it. Paint films, curing as a continuous layer that bridges across the boards.
On a horizontal walking surface that difference is decisive. A paint film has an edge, and an edge lifts. Water gets under it at a fastener hole or a board end, adhesion goes, and it comes off in flakes that must be stripped before anything else can happen. A penetrating stain has no film to lift. It wears thin, it fades, and you recoat.
Fences are a different case. A fence is vertical, it drains fast, and a solid-body stain or an exterior paint can perform for years on one.

How much grain do you want to see?
Pigment is sunscreen. The more of it, the longer the finish resists UV and the less the wood goes grey underneath. That is the entire tradeoff: durability bought with grain.

Stripping, sanding and what is underneath
Most deck calls are not staining calls. They are removal calls the homeowner has not identified yet.
When the old finish has to come off
If the current finish is peeling, flaking or blotchy, a new coat over it fails in the same pattern within a season. It has to come off, by chemical stripper and pressure washing, by sanding, or by both, and that is the largest labour item on a restoration.
What sanding is actually for
It opens the wood so stain can penetrate, and it takes down the raised fibre and splintering that UV and wet-dry cycling create on a horizontal board. A deck gone silver-grey and fuzzy underfoot is not dirty. The surface fibres are broken down, and staining over them just colours the damage.
Structure, while the deck is open
Soft boards, split ends, popped nails and rusted screw heads get handled before finishing. Replacing two boards during prep is cheap. Finding them after the stain has cured is not.
Our process
- Walkthrough. Identify the existing finish, test adhesion, probe for soft wood, check fasteners and framing.
- Written estimate. Strip scope, sanding scope, repairs, product, coat count and exclusions.
- Protection. Plants, hardscape and siding covered before any stripper or washer comes out.
- Removal and cleaning. Strip where required, pressure wash, treat mildew, rinse.
- Dry time. We let the wood reach a workable moisture level and we check it.
- Repairs and sanding. Board and fastener work, then sanding to open the grain.
- Stain and seal. Brushed, rolled or sprayed and back-brushed, working board ends deliberately.

Mildew, salt and the dry window
Long Beach gets 12.02 inches of rain a year, which sounds like ideal conditions for exterior wood until you account for the marine layer sitting over the city most mornings.
Mildew
That humidity feeds mildew on the shaded north side of a fence and in the gaps between deck boards where air does not move. It has to be killed and washed off first, because stain over it seals a living colony under the finish and it grows back through.
Salt
Air off San Pedro Bay carries salt inland and it lands hardest on the water side of the city. A deck in Belmont Shore or Naples, or a fence a few blocks off the sand in Alamitos Beach, takes a load that a fence in Cypress never sees. Salt holds moisture against the surface, corrodes fasteners, and shortens the interval between recoats. On those properties we specify stainless or coated fasteners and plan a shorter maintenance cycle up front.
The dry window
After a strip and a wash the wood is soaked, and it has to come back down to a workable moisture content before finishing. That is complicated by mornings that stay damp under the marine layer well past sunrise. We coat in the middle of the day and we do not put stain on a board that reads damp, because trapping moisture under a finish produces blistering and peeling on wood exactly as it does on stucco.
What shapes your estimate
- Square and linear footage. Deck surface plus railing, stairs and skirting, which cost far more per square foot than open decking.
- Existing finish. Clean wood needing a wash is one job. A peeling solid stain that needs stripping is another.
- Sanding scope. Spot sanding versus a full sand of every board and rail.
- Repairs. Board replacement, fastener work and structural fixes.
- Product and access. Elevated decks, tight side yards and steep grade all cost time.

Can you stain a fence on both sides?
Yes, where there is access. On a shared fence line we ask you to speak to the neighbour first, because we are not going to work from their yard without permission.
Why did my last deck stain go blotchy?
Usually because it went onto a surface that had not been sanded open, so the stain sat on burnished areas and soaked into worn ones. Occasionally it is a finish applied over residual stripper that was never fully rinsed.
Are you licensed and insured, and do you warranty the work?
Yes. We are fully licensed, insured and bonded, with a certificate of insurance on request. We warranty our workmanship, and the stain manufacturer’s warranty applies separately.
