01
What Venetian plaster is made of
Venetian plaster, also called polished plaster, is slaked lime combined with marble dust and often marble chips. Lime formulations can run over 40 percent marble powder, which is what gives a finished wall its depth and its weight in the hand.
Layers, not coats
It goes on in one to four thin layers, applied with a spatula or trowel over a primer and a basecoat. The layers are not paint coats. Each one is pressed, scraped and worked, and the material moves under the blade rather than flowing off a brush.
The finish is decided at the end
Burnished with a steel trowel, the surface takes on a smooth, glass-like sheen and an illusion of depth that reads as stone rather than as a wall. Left unburnished, it stays matte, rough and stone-like, which is the right choice in some rooms, but that version is brittle and more easily damaged.
A wax sealant layer extends the life of the finish and can make it waterproof, which is what makes plaster viable in a bathroom or a wet bar. Properly applied, polished plaster is highly polished, rock-hard and marble-like.
Where it belongs in the house
This is mainly an interior material, on walls and ceilings, imitating marble, travertine or limestone. It is particularly strong on shapes a flat coating cannot flatter. Curved surfaces, columns, corbels, barrel ceilings, arched openings and niches all take plaster well, because the material follows the form and the burnish follows the light around it. A rolled acrylic on a column reads as a painted column. Plaster on a column reads as stone.
Rooms we get called into most: entries and stair halls, dining rooms, primary bathrooms, wine cellars, home theatres, powder rooms, and fireplace surrounds. Plaster is tintable with natural or synthetic colorants, so colour is built into the material rather than applied over it. That is why a chip in a plastered wall does not show a different colour underneath.

The related techniques, and how they differ
Marmorino, scagliola and sgraffito are the traditional relatives of Venetian plaster, and they answer different design questions.
| Finish | What it is | Look | Durability | Best rooms |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Venetian plaster, burnished | Slaked lime with marble dust, burnished with a steel trowel | Glass-like sheen, illusion of depth | Rock-hard, waxed for water resistance | Entries, dining rooms, feature walls |
| Venetian plaster, unburnished | Same material, left matte | Matte, rough, stone-like | Brittle and damage-prone | Low-traffic walls, ceilings |
| Marmorino | Lime and marble plaster in the same family, worked flatter | Soft stone, subtle movement | Hard, less reflective | Whole rooms, hallways |
| Scagliola | Lime and pigment imitating inlaid marble | Coloured, veined, decorative | Hard, historically used on columns | Columns, panels, fire surrounds |
| Sgraffito | Layers scratched back to reveal the colour below | Incised pattern and contrast | Hard, dependent on the layering | Feature panels, exterior detail |
| Roman clay | Thin trowelled clay-look finish over basecoat | Soft, cloudy, low sheen | Softer than lime plaster, seals well | Bedrooms, offices, ceilings |
| Faux and glazing | Translucent glaze worked over a base colour | Aged, layered, hand-worked | Coating-level, refresh as needed | Studies, powder rooms, trim |
| Murals | Hand-painted subject work | Whatever is designed | Sealed as required | Nurseries, dining rooms, cellars |
Marmorino when you want the whole room quiet. Scagliola when a column or a panel needs to imitate inlaid marble. Sgraffito when the design wants incised pattern rather than a smooth field.

Working with your designer
Most of this work arrives through an interior designer or an architect, and the process runs better that way.
How we take direction
We take the specification, the reference images and the colour direction from your designer, and we push back early where a material choice will not survive the room it is going into.
What we produce for design review: sample boards in the specified colour, a mock-up on the actual wall when the room justifies it, a written scope naming the number of layers and the finish level, and a maintenance sheet the homeowner keeps.
What shapes your estimate
Specialty finishes are scoped by the square foot of finished surface, not by the room, because a small bathroom with a coffered ceiling can carry more labour than a large flat bedroom.
What moves it: the number of layers, whether the surface is burnished, how much of the room is curved or detailed, ceiling height and access, wax sealing, and the condition of the drywall or plaster underneath. Flat, sound, level substrate is cheap to finish. A wall with texture, patching and a wavy plane has to be brought flat first, and that is real labour before the decorative work starts.
Consultation
We look at the room, the light through it at different hours, the adjacent finishes, and what the space actually gets used for.
Sample
Colour and technique go onto a board, then onto the wall where the project warrants it. Approved in the room's own light, not in a showroom.
Substrate preparation
Skim, sand and level. Polished plaster shows every imperfection under it, so this stage is longer than clients expect.
Primer and basecoat
Tinted to support the finish colour, because the basecoat influences the final depth.
Layers
One to four thin layers with a spatula or trowel, each worked and allowed to set.
Burnish and seal
Steel trowel burnish where the finish calls for it, then wax where the room needs water resistance.
Care handoff
We show you how to clean it and what not to use on it, in writing.

Long Beach conditions inside the house
Interior work escapes the worst of the coastal exposure, but not all of it.
Lime responds to humidity
Long Beach humidity runs high on marine layer mornings, and lime plaster is a mineral material that responds to moisture in the air. That is an advantage in most rooms, since the wall buffers humidity rather than sealing it, and it is why plaster feels different from drywall in a closed room.
Wet rooms change the specification
A primary bathroom or a wet bar gets the wax sealant layer, which extends the life of the finish and can make it waterproof. In a wine cellar the same property is the reason to use plaster at all.
Older homes, original substrate
In the historic districts, interior plaster substrate is original and lath-backed, and it is worth repairing rather than replacing before any decorative finish goes over it. We assess that before quoting a plaster program in a 1920s house.
Where this work lands
Cerritos, La Palma and the higher-income areas around them generate a lot of it. Cerritos carries the highest median household income of our service cities and 76.4 percent owner occupancy, which is the profile of an owner who plans a room rather than repaints one.

05
Why homeowners and designers choose us
We prepare the substrate first
Polished plaster magnifies whatever is under it. Most disappointing plaster jobs are actually disappointing drywall jobs.
We sample in the room
Lime plaster changes with the light and with the hour. A board under showroom lighting is not a decision.
We are honest about the unburnished look
It is beautiful and it is brittle. In a hallway with children and dogs, we will steer you to a burnished and waxed finish and explain why.
We carry the full decorative range
Marmorino, scagliola, sgraffito, Roman clay, glazing and mural work, so a mixed-technique room does not need three contractors.

Frequently asked questions about Venetian plaster
How long does a room take?
A single feature wall usually runs two to four days. A full room with a ceiling runs one to two weeks, because layers have to set before the next one goes on and the burnish cannot be rushed.
Is Venetian plaster durable?
Properly applied and burnished, it is highly polished, rock-hard and marble-like, and a wax sealant layer extends its life further. Left unburnished it reads matte and stone-like but is brittle and easier to damage, which is a room-by-room decision.
Can it be used in a bathroom or a wine cellar?
Yes. The wax sealant layer can make the finish waterproof, which is why plaster works in bathrooms, wet bars and cellars where a standard coating would not hold up.
Will it damage my existing walls?
No. Plaster goes over a primer and basecoat on prepared substrate. If your walls are original lath and plaster, we repair rather than replace before finishing, and we say so in the estimate.
Is it reversible?
Plaster is a permanent finish in the sense that removing it means skimming the wall back. It can be recoated, refreshed or skimmed over later, so a future owner is not stuck, but treat it as a committed choice rather than a paint colour.
How do I maintain it, and how often does it need attention?
Dust it and wipe it with water. No abrasives, no solvent cleaners, no strong detergents. A waxed burnished finish typically goes ten years or more before it wants attention, and glazed and faux work is closer to seven.
Do you work with my interior designer?
Yes, and most of this work comes to us that way. We take the specification and colour direction from your designer, produce sample boards and wall mock-ups for approval, and provide a written scope naming layer count and finish level.
Do you offer free written estimates on specialty plaster finishes?
Yes. We walk the room, check the substrate, and provide an itemised written estimate at no charge. Call (562) 269-1108.
Can you plaster a ceiling as well as the walls?
Yes, and a barrel or coffered ceiling is one of the places plaster earns its cost, because the burnish follows the curve in a way a flat coating cannot.
Is your crew licensed and insured for specialty plaster finishes?
Yes. We are fully licensed, insured and bonded, with a certificate of insurance on request.
